Mr. Mackie-A History of The School Counselor
Mr. Mackey is the guidance counselor of South Park Elementary School. He first appears in the episode “Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo.” He is most known for his unusually large head (which may be the result of his tight tie) and his catchphrase, “mmm’kay,” which he inserts into most dialogue.
While sometimes more sensible than other adults in South Park, Mr. Mackey tends to be fairly ineffective in his job, giving well-meaning advice that rarely helps people. In early episodes he would constantly remind students that “drugs are bad,” but never bothered to give definitive reasons why. In the episode “Ike’s Wee-Wee” he passed around a bag of marijuana during a lesson and got fired when it seemed like a student stole it; he briefly did drugs himself as a result.
He seems to serve as Principal Victoria’s assistant, running many school activities. He has occasionally taught lessons, including the boys’ Sex Ed. class in “Proper Condom Use” (despite knowing next to nothing about sex himself). He wound up in a relationship with the girls’ teacher, Ms. Choksondik, which seems to have lasted until her death in “Simpsons Did It Already.” He temporarily took over teaching her class until Mr. Garrison got the job again.
Mr. Mackey was apparently molested as a child, as seen in “Insheeption.” “Royal Pudding” reveals that he has an obsession with combating tooth decay, which killed his father. The episode “Mystery of the Urinal Deuce” also shows him in a less rational state due to a student defecating in the school urinal.
Mr. Mackey is voiced by South Park co-creator Trey Parker. Parker says that Mr. Mackey was actually inspired by his own old school counselor, who was named Mr. Lackey and used the same “mmm’kay” phrase.
